Where Did Summer Go?

Aug 26, 2013 | Life on the Farm

It’s the end of August, and everyone is asking the same question: Where did the summer go? It’s been a strange summer here in Wisconsin, with a late spring and lots of cool, overcast days. We had one good, hot sunny week and everything was looking great, but now we’re worried that we’re going to run out of growing weather.

So what do we do? We harvest what we can, which right now is our third cutting of hay, and then we wait and hope for some more good weather. If Mother Nature is agreeable, we’ll be harvesting wheat soon, followed by corn silage and soybeans.

The beginning of October is the average first frost, and we’re hoping that it won’t come sooner than that. It’s not a year that we need an early frost. But that’s out of our hands, so we do what we can right now, and get some projects done before the hard work of harvesting hits. We could be looking at a late harvest, and that means being out in the fields seven days a week. But that’s all right, we’ve done it before. We’re ready for it.
