Farming is cyclical. There are times when there aren’t enough hours in the day, and others when there’s a short break in the fieldwork. Right now is one of those times, and I’ll take it.
We’ll be bringing in another crop of hay pretty soon, and the wheat will be ready for harvest in the next couple of weeks, too. So right now I’ve got time to catch up on what every business owner has to do: paperwork.
Part of that is logging all of the information we gather on a daily and weekly basis about how we’re caring the land: what the moisture levels are, what we’ve planted and when, and what fertilizer we’ve used to enrich the soil. Having all of this at our fingertips helps us make the best decisions about growing crops and caring for our natural resources, including the soil. It lets us do it better every time.
Having some downtime in the office also allows me to catch up on those projects that have been put off during the busy season, keep in touch with my partners about what’s happening on the farm, and staying on top of what is going on in the national and world dairy market.
It feels good to get these things done, but next week when it’s time to get back out and harvest, we’ll be ready.
