Cheese: Wisconsin is the Word

Feb 20, 2015 | Dairy News

Have you seen the new ad for Wendy’s Bacon & Blue burger? Of course, it features Wisconsin Blue cheese. When I see a national ad like this that features our cheese, I’m struck by how much the word “Wisconsin” means in the cheese world.

Not only is Wisconsin cheese respected the world over for its flavor and quality, but did you know that if Wisconsin were a country, we would rank fourth in the world in terms of cheese production? Plus, Wisconsin cheesemakers are true experts. Wisconsin is the only state that requires that a licensed cheesemaker supervise cheese production. We even have a master cheesemaker program at the Center for Dairy Research that trains cheesemakers in the art and science of cheesemaking. And our master cheesemakers are the most award winning in the world: Wisconsin cheesemakers won nearly 39% of the awards at the 2014 World Championship Cheese Contest. Our dairy industry accounts for almost 40% of all agriculture jobs in our state, making it the largest segment of the industry. This industry truly gives back to our community, providing 146,200 jobs across the state and tax revenue for schools, infrastructure and families. So, next time you sample some Wisconsin cheese, whether it’s on a cracker, a burger, or all by itself, keep in mind that it’s our state’s heritage and dedication to this delicious art form that makes all the difference.
