It’s only mid-May, but we’ve already gotten a lot of planting done. We’ve had a string of clear days and perfect soil conditions. All the corn is planted – 1,500 acres – and we’ve started on the alfalfa, so we’re three weeks ahead of last year. When Mother Nature lines up and gets everything going, it’s pretty special.
Checking the soil quality
You know you’re a farmer when you notice how beautiful the soil is. The ground froze well over the winter, and didn’t have a lot of rain to harden it. That means when we got to planting, it crumbles apart perfectly. It’s mellow and the soil temperature is ideal, so it makes a good seed bed.
One thing you learn when you farm is you can worry all you want, but it doesn’t do any good. When we have a spring like this, it’s encouraging and exciting. Everybody’s ready to go, and it’s a lot of fun. Nothing’s a guarantee, but we’re off to a good start.
