Despite the slow start, it was a good summer for alfalfa. The generous moisture kept things green and growing. In fact, we got four very nice cuttings that will help feed our cows through the winter.
Last week, when the rest of the state was seeing some severe storms, we were up until midnight cutting hay. Somehow, the rain skirted us and we didn’t get the flooding that some saw in Madison and up north. It just goes to show you that all you can do is be prepared.
Now, we still need some sun and more warm weather to mature our corn. If things go according to plan, we should be harvesting right around the first of October, and then it will be a mad dash until it freezes. That, and the rest of the fall farm work like tillage and replacing the nutrients in the soil will keep us very busy until the snow flies.
