A Growing Year

Sep 14, 2016 | Life on the Farm

I say this at the end of every summer, but I can’t believe it’s already September.

This summer was a pretty good one in terms of weather for us. At one point we were getting a little dry. Some of the fields didn’t pollinate right because of the lack of rain, but then the skies opened up and it did the fields a lot of good. The rain we’ve been getting recently is putting us in really good shape for all of the crops. Even with the little scare we had with the dry weather, the rain came at just the right time.

If you want to talk about a growing year, 2016 has been one for us. We’ve already had four cuttings of hay, and we’re working on the fifth cutting right now. It’s pretty rare for us that we get five cuttings of hay in one season, so we’re really happy with that.

Right now the corn yields are looking really good, too; we’ll have plenty of feed for the cows. We’ll probably start chopping corn silage any day – we’re just waiting for the ground to dry off a little bit – then work on soybeans in the beginning of October, maybe the end of September if everything works in our favor.

Harvest season is here, so there will be a lot of tractors and machinery out on the roads. As of 2014, it is illegal to pass farm machinery in a no passing zone on Wisconsin roads. The men and women driving the machinery want to get home to their families just as badly as you do, and we really appreciate it when you take it slow and help keep the roadways safe for everyone on them.
