Bridging the Milk Gap: The Great American Milk Drive

May 6, 2014 | Dairy News

As a dairy farmer, I’m proud that milk and other dairy foods are a top source of nutrition, including nine essential nutrients like high quality protein. So when I learned that dairy farmers like us could help put milk on the table for needy families, I was really happy. And you can help, too.

Hungry families in our area need milk – in fact, it’s the #1 nutritious product requested by food bank clients, but it is rarely donated. So rarely, that 37 million people served by food banks got less than a gallon of milk per person every year. Until now. Now through May 25, Dairy farmers are partnering with Feeding America to sponsor The Great American Milk Drive , which will help deliver milk to families who need it most across the country. This is the first nationwide program that will deliver gallons of milk to the one in six Americans who are food insecure.

Here’s how it works. At your local grocery store, buy a five-dollar voucher (or vouchers) for a gallon of milk. Share you postal zip code at the checkout counter, and the milk will be delivered to the food pantry in your community, to serve families near you. You can also donate with one click online.

Nothing could be easier, and I’m proud of our industry for doing the right thing. Sharing nutritious milk with families who need it most makes sense. Please join us in helping to bridge the milk gap!
