Towards the end of winter before we get really busy in the fields, I like to take some time for education and professional development. Last week I was in Madison for the Professional Dairy Producers of Wisconsin Business Conference.
Events like these are great opportunities for personal and professional development, and to sharpen our minds and skills. I can also learn about what is going on in the dairy industry across the state. I get new information and good refreshers about the industry from speakers and other farmers.
When I go to conferences, I like to network with other farmers. That is one of the best things about farmers – we know that together we can do more. We like to share ideas and experiences that we’ve had on our own farms so others can learn. There are a lot of good people in the industry. Since we are a small percentage of the population, farmers tend to stick together and have an open-door policy. Before we build something new, we go to other farms to see what worked and what didn’t. Farmers want to help each other out.
When you believe in something, we can all benefit from it. It’s important to take the time to communicate with other farmers. Together, we can keep moving the industry forward.
