First Days of Life

Jul 23, 2016 | Animal Care

On our farm, we have five to seven calves born every day. The calves are born year-round. Sometimes we’ll have spurts when more calves are born at one time than another, but it’s pretty consistent here.

When calves are born, we make sure they are clean and dry as quickly as we can. Then they are given colostrum as soon as possible. Colostrum is the mother’s first milk that is produced immediately after the calf is born. It’s really important that the calf gets colostrum because it is full of antibodies that jumpstart the new calf’s immune system. Since it takes a few days, even as long as a few weeks, for the calf’s body’s immune system to create its own antibodies, the extra protection of the antibodies in the colostrum is essential for setting the calf up for a good, healthy life.

Another thing that we do shortly after the calf is born is dip their navel in a strong, concentrated iodine. The iodine is used to protect the navel from tetanus and infections in general. Right after birth, the navel is like an open door to the entire digestive tract, so it’s really important to protect it and do what we can to prevent future health challenges.

We give the calves ear tags right away when they’re born. That way, we know who they are, and they’re in our system so we can track them for any health related things like illness, vaccinations, etc.

The first few hours of a calf’s life are a flurry of activity. Since they are the base of our herd, their care is of top importance on the farm.
