Meet The Interns!

Sep 19, 2024 | The Majestic Crossing Team

I introduced our Honduran interns here on our blog a couple of years ago. We’ve continued the intern program and have three new interns on the farm learning alongside us. Emelly, Katherine and Yemi have been great additions to the farm and we’ve had a great time introducing them to Wisconsin dairy farm life. I’m turning over the blog to these three to introduce themselves and tell you about what they do here on the farm.

Emelly

I am from Comayagua in Honduras. It’s a place with a lot of tourism and has a lot of history. I didn’t grow up on a farm and I didn’t have any farming experience. But growing up I visited farms and I became interested in agriculture.

I went to Universidad Nacional de Agricultura, and I graduated in June of last year. I learned so much there and had a great experience. There were many opportunities for me to learn there and it made me even more interested in learning more about animals and crops.

I’ve been in Wisconsin since January and winter was a surprise. I didn’t know it could get so cold. I like cold weather, but I have never felt the kind of cold where you can’t feel your fingers! But everyone here is very nice and very kind.

At Majestic Crossing I work in the milking parlor. I also help move cows and take care of the cows when they calve. I like working with the newborn calves, they are very cute! I like to learn something new every day. I am a curious person and I ask a lot of questions so I can learn from other people.

When my internship is over, I hope to either go back to my country and work in agriculture or maybe find a way to stay here and keep working and learning.

Yimi

I am from El Cacao, Jutiapa, Atlantida and I went to Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Honduras. I came to Majestic Crossing about 9 months ago.

I didn’t grow up on a farm but I lived in a rural area with agriculture all around me. I am most interested in the crop side of farming but I also like cows. On the farm my main job is to feed cows and work with the crops. But I also help with the maternity pen and help keep the robots running. The milking robots are awesome!

After this internship, I want to study more about crops and soil science.

Wisconsin has been great, except for the weather. It’s so hot where I come from and I am not used to this cold.

Katherine

I am from Jano, Olancho, and went to the same university as Emelly, Universidad Nacional de Agricultura. I’ve been at Majestic Crossing for about 6 months now.

Growing up in Honduras, we were in a rural area and my grandfather grew crops and had dairy cows, but I didn’t grow up on a farm. I decided to take on this internship at Majestic because when I heard how much milk the cows here produce I wanted to come and learn more. I wanted to see what the dairy industry in America looked like.

On the farm I move cows to the parlor, I milk, I help take care of the maternity pen, and help with drying off cows. I learn a lot from the people at the farm, Pancho has been a great teacher. He is always available to teach us and show us new things. I also learn a lot from our veterinarians.

So far the most surprising thing about Wisconsin has been the weather. I knew it would be cold, but not so cold. I always wanted to see snow, and it is beautiful but now I am sick of it!

After my internship is over I want to keep studying and find a job in agriculture.
