For all of the planning that we do in dairy farming, there are a lot of factors we can’t control. Mother Nature is a huge one, but another one is the milk price. Right now, the milk price is pretty low, and it’s going to keep decreasing for the coming months.
The last couple of years we’ve had really high milk prices. At Majestic Crossing, we were really judicial with the high milk prices, making sure we were being smart and thinking about long-term strategy. The strategizing really starts paying off when the milk price takes a dip like it is right now.
We are doing everything we can to help ourselves. In planting season, a lot of it boils down to making sure we have good forages to feed our cows. If our forages are the best quality possible, we can feed more hay, which is lower cost than buying grain.
While we think about ways we can save in these tougher times, we never want to compromise the quality of milk that is produced on our farm. The cow care will continue to be top notch so our cows are healthy. We will not cut corners in milk production or cow care.
With dairy farming, when you’re in it, you’re in it – through the good times, and the bad.
