We’ve been doing tours for school groups for a couple of years now. Our partner, Wayne, has taken the lead on this project because he really has a passion for it. This spring, we hosted a number of different school districts from the county at our Highland facility. We hosted these young children with help from our FFA friends at Plymouth and Sheboygan Falls high schools.
The kids, the teachers and the parents are just amazed when they see what we do. For many of them, it’s the first time they’ve been on a farm and they can’t believe the level of sophistication it takes to keep things running smoothly, and everything that goes on here.
The other day, I was preparing a new field for planting and I decided to stop in and meet the neighbor who lived right next door. I introduced myself and it turned out that her son had just that same day been on one of our farm tours and had told her all about it. She was really impressed.
Giving school tours is a natural extension of what we do – it is part of building community relationships and helping to educate the children in our community. Plus it’s just a whole lot of fun having the kids around and watching them learn about the farm and meet the animals.
