Validating our Animal Care Practices: The Validus Program

Jun 26, 2013 | Animal Care

At Majestic Crossing, our priority is to give our cows the very best care so they can produce the very best milk. Farmers, along with our veterinarians are the first line of care for our animals, and that’s why, five years ago, we decided to become certified through Validus, an animal care validation program.

Our four farm families felt strongly that we wanted to take the lead on this issue. We wanted to be proactive in making sure our animals had the best care, and to get information and suggestions from an impartial third party about how to go about improving our on-farm practices. We chose Validus because it focused on what’s best for animals and for consumers.  It’s a strong program that has been reviewed by animal scientists and veterinarians.

Every year, we go through the audit process.  We work with our veterinarian to build our animal care protocols. The experts who visit us have an unbiased interest in helping us develop the best animal care we can, regardless of the economic impact on our business. That’s what gives them credibility.

Our cows' health and comfort are our first priority. We bed them with sand because it's the gold standard.

What I’ve learned from this process is that it’s so important to have an open mind. We’re very proud of the way we care for our animals, yet we’re always learning more and trying to do it better.  Our cows deserve nothing less than that.
