Fighting the Calendar

Nov 18, 2013 | Life on the Farm

It’s November and that means we’re pushing hard to get the last of the crops in and fertilize the fields with manure. The first freeze could happen any time now. With the late spring we had, our whole season has been condensed, and we’re feeling the push to get things done.

Harvesting the corn

I tell my employees to be prepared to work weekends. We start our days earlier, and work longer. When the weather is right, we’ve got to get the work done. Come Thanksgiving, employees will have the day off, but if it’s a good day for harvesting or hauling manure, I’ll be out there like I was last year.

When I talk to old-timer farmer neighbors of mine, they tell stories like “I remember the year we had a major snowstorm on November 4.” I try not to listen to that, because there’s no use worrying. Still, Mother Nature waits for nobody.
