Going Whole Hog at the Fair

Oct 14, 2013 | Life on the Farm

Labor Day Weekend was the Sheboygan County Fair. It’s one of the best in the state, with rides and games and 4-H shows and a meat sale. We go every year, and buy a hog at the meat sale. The proceeds go directly to the kids who raise these animals, and we like supporting their work and being part of the farm community in our area.

We took the hog to the butcher, and soon we’ll be picking up chops, hams and bacon to give to our employees over the holidays. Our employees really appreciate it, and we feel good giving them something that’s good, that’s from our neighbors, and that’s sustainable.

My nephews are part of the meat sale, and raise steers to sell at the fair. I know how hard they work and how proud they are to be able to contribute to their families. I guess I just feel really fortunate to live in this area, where we’re blessed with fertile soil and a good climate. And best of all, a farming community that supports each other.
