Harvest Time

Sep 18, 2015 | Life on the Farm

We’ve had some dry, sunny weather and have been cutting hay this week. We’re anxiously awaiting Mother Nature to do her thing and give us enough dry days so we can start harvesting corn silage. If things keep going this way, we’ll get our corn harvested by October 1. That’s a lot earlier than last year. Getting the harvest done sooner opens a lot of doors, so we can start looking at applying fertilizer to the fields, and even begin our maintenance work sooner.

It’s been a good year so far. We’ve had timely rains and the yield looks good. It feels good to have so much haylage put away, ready for feeding the animals this winter.

Of course, Mother Nature could always throw a wrench in things. We never know what our yields will be until all is said and done. That’s all part of farming, we take it as it comes.
