Tired of Winter

Apr 8, 2014 | Animal Care, Life on the Farm

Well, there you have it. We’re all tired of winter, and we’ve been really glad to see that Mother Nature has finally decided to give us a taste of spring. So, what’s happening on the farm at this time of year? It’s too wet and cold to get into the fields yet, but planting season will be here before we know it, so that means maintenance. Lots of maintenance.

Our employees are going through all the equipment, getting the tractors cleaned up and performing all the basic maintenance that machines need to keep working efficiently and dependably. Getting mechanisms greased, changing the oil and making sure everything’s in working order takes a lot of time. Fortunately, we have a skilled shop crew who can take care of about 90% of our maintenance needs right here on the farm.

On the animal side, we’re dealing with lots of swings in the temperature this time of year. Sometimes we’ve got 20’s at night and 50’s during the day. Cows, just like kids, don’t like those dramatic swings in temperature and dampness so we keep a close eye on them and make sure they’re staying healthy. It’s important to just be aware.

There’s always plenty to do, but we’re getting the job done. When the weather finally decides to break, we’ll be ready.
